TESSA is a modern Mediterranean tavern blending southern French and Italian cuisines. Executive Chef Cedric Tovar has created a contemporary and sophisticated menu showcasing the TESSA signature style.
We are located in the heart of the Upper West Side – just down the block from the Beacon Theater and a short walk from Lincoln Center, the American Museum of Natural History and Central Park.
TESSA seats up to 65 guests in its main dining room, 50 in the bar/lounge area and up to 18 in our private dining / wine room at the rear of the restaurant. We welcome private events and also provide off-site catering.
We are open every day for lunch, dinner and happy hour and a fabulous brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
TESSA opened in April 2014 and was the culmination of a several year journey by first-time restaurateur, Larry Bellone, long-time restaurateur, Will Tracy and chef, Cedric Tovar. TESSA is named after Larry’s daughter Tessa.
Will is a co-owner and the General Manager at TESSA. Will has been involved in the restaurant business for over 30 years. He has started, owned and operated several restaurants during that time, including The Brighton Grill on the Upper East Side and Punch Restaurant / Wined Up on 20th Street.
Cedric is the Executive Chef at TESSA. Cedric was born in Alsace, grew up in the south of France and began his culinary career in Paris. In New York, he has worked at Town, Django and the Peacock Alley at the Waldorf and spent 2 years running Daniel Boulud’s catering company Feast & Fêtes. Most recently, prior to TESSA, Cedric was involved with Bobo and Rosemary’s in the West Village.
In the kitchen, Edwin Claflin is our Chef de Cuisine and our Pastry Chef is Yarisis Jacobo. Andrew Shields runs our Beverage Program and manages the dining room. And Elizabeth and Enzi complete the front of the house team.
The unique design and décor of TESSA was conceived by the architectural firm of BateMasi.
On entering TESSA, you are immediately struck by the exposed whitewashed brick walls and the double layered blackened steel security gates that cover the entire ceiling. These gates, suspended from the ceiling at different levels, create both a bold design statement and a screen concealing the restaurant’s mechanical systems. Gates and the diamond patterns created by the gate openings, continue as a theme throughout the space – in the gate wrapped bar and in the industrial scissor lamps. Additional industrialized elements like diamond steel plate stairs, blackened steel bathroom sinks, herringbone woven telecommunications cables are on display throughout the restaurant.
The design combines industrial and urban elements with rustic charm creating a compelling and striking setting that is elegant, inviting and comfortable. The inspiration and design concept for TESSA was to pull in the feeling of the city streets celebrating the mundane or utilitarian aspects of the cityscape and create a transformed version of the City within TESSA.
TESSA has a semi-private dining that comfortably accommodates up to 18 guests. It is the perfect setting for celebratory dinners and business, social or casual get togethers. We have a variety of menu options – including a chef’s menu with wine pairing – to make your event extra special.
